Hiking near Abuja

Written by kevin

After all the excitement of the Osun festival I needed something to do on Sunday (other than the washing). So when Alex asked Dave and I if we were interested in going for a walk we said yes straight away. Alex us and his friend Amy out of Abuja city, through a small town called Mpape to some local hills. It was great to actually do a bit of walking in the countryside, you could hardly tell you were just outside Abuja.

The first picture shows the rock we walked up, the second shows the fields we walked through to get to it and the third shows Amy, Dave and Alex sitting at the top.

One of the surprising things is the amount of vegetation on top of these rock outcrops, trees, flowers and small ponds with frogspawn. It even looks like the Fulani herd their cattle up there. I must go back in dry season to see how it looks then.

There was a lovely view from the top, you could see across to the reservoir at Usuma dam and the countryside below was dotted with small farms. The sounds of children and yam being pounded drifted up to us.
