Akassa – Day 3

Written by kevin

The main planned activity for the day was a trip to the beach, with Pete, Mary and Ine. First we walked to the AKWA school, to see the nursery and primary classes.

To get to the beach we took machines, with two of us per machine. We had to get off for a few of the bridges (where the few rotten planks wouldn’t support a bike plus three riders). At one point the path was blocked by a gang of young men with machetes, clearing the jungle for new electricity lines. They asked us for some money but quickly realised they weren’t going to get any and let us through.

The beach was fantastic, long and sandy and sloping very gently. We had a great time jumping the waves and floating along in the current. After a picnic Pete and Mary went back with Ine for a teacher’s workshop at the training centre. Jenny, Tracey and I stayed for more swimming. In the first picture below you can just make out an oil rig in the distance (slightly left of the centre of the picture).

In the evening we had a lovely curry cooked by Amy (with coconut rice from Timi) and then a bit of a sing-song to celebrate Ine’s imminent return to the Netherlands. Timi played keyboard and Tracey and Jenny did much of the singing. Timi had even composed a special song for Ine.
